Insurance & protection
Coverage options, explained without the jargon.
Protection products are optional unless required by state law or by our rental policies. Nothing here is insurance advice.
Please note
Availability, pricing, terms, exclusions, and deductibles for any protection product are set out in the product's own terms and in your rental agreement. Read those documents before you decide.
Your own coverage may already apply
Many personal auto policies extend to rental vehicles, and some credit cards provide damage coverage when the rental is paid with that card. Check with your insurer or card issuer before your rental so you know what is and isn't covered.
Protection products we may offer
- Damage protection — may reduce or waive your responsibility for damage to the rental vehicle, subject to terms.
- Supplemental liability — may provide additional liability limits above the state minimum, where offered.
- Personal accident and effects — may cover accidental injury and personal belongings, where offered.
- Roadside assistance plan — covers services such as lockout, jump start, tyre change, and towing for non-mechanical events.
Which products are available depends on your state and location. The options that apply to your reservation are shown before payment.
What protection products are not
A protection product is not an insurance policy unless its own terms say so. Coverage can be voided by prohibited use — for example driving under the influence, unauthorised drivers, off-road use, or breaching the vehicle use restrictions in our rental policies.
If something happens during your rental
- Make sure everyone is safe and call emergency services if needed.
- File a police report where required by law or by our policies.
- Call us as soon as it is safe, and do not authorise repairs yourself.
- Keep all documentation for the claim.
